Until you have been to the Mission at 500 Bluff Street here in Sioux City, and seen for yourself, it is hard to imagine what it takes to care for hundreds of men, women and children each day. Plan to visit us and see for yourself how much more the Gospel Mission is! |
History:
For over 70 years, the Gospel Mission has been working to meet the needs of the homeless in the Siouxland region.
As a Christian, non-denominational, non-profit agency, we have aimed to pursue our motto:
“To Feed the Hungry; Clothe the Poor; Shelter the Homeless; Bring Them to Christ.”
In 2011, the Mission provided 381 meals per day, housed 85 individuals per night, and gave out nearly $1250 in clothing and household items each week to needy men, women and children in our tri-state region.
Twenty years ago the typical client was a 55-year old alcoholic. Today, that face has changed to a woman in her mid-thirties with young children. Societal changes are not always for the better.
Fortunately, the Mission has adapted to meet the changing face of the homeless. In 1999, the Gospel Mission opened the doors of its Women and Children’s’ Shelter. Capable of housing up to 35 women and children, it has rarely seen a night without occupants. This ministry addition brought with it a need for more food, clothing, and services. As that need is shared with the community, the community has responded.
In 1997, the Mission opened the doors of its outlet store. As the community became aware of its operation, the amount of donated items increased and the need for a larger storefront pressed upon us. In addition to providing income for the Mission, the store also provides transitional employment for a number of clients working their way through the Mission as well as for a number of near-homeless individuals.

As part of our move, we also kept in mind our existing client program and identified additional needs and are working to address them.
Our new program will be designed to teach classes on:
- life-skills
- financial management
- job skill acquisition
- time management
- work ethics
We will be able to offer a state-of-the art program for long-term restoration and preparation for re-entry of men and women back into society as productive citizens. We will have the room to support the transition from rescue and recovery, to rehabilitation, transformation…and hope.
